Week 2 : Culture + Context

Lights on Campus

This week included a guest lecture from Lee Moreau, at Continuum - a multidisciplinary design firm. Some of the interesting things discussed were:

One of the things that stayed with me after Lee Moreau's talk was how he emphasized on the things most important to people. And I realized that while thinking about culture and context, there was nothing more important to me than what was right here and right now - MIT - its campus and its culture.

The site I chose for my project was the entire school and how light is such an important aspect of our campus. Through this photograph series on lights around me, I hope that I can capture some essence of everyday student li(ght)fe at MIT.

MIT's entrance leads to Lobby 7, the beginning of the infinite corridor. It is always bumbling with activity, whether it is tourists photographing the inside of the dome or students rushing in and out of the majestic glass doors. I caught this view one fall evening, as I was heading to the student center.

Barker Library

The Barker Engineering library is one of MIT's most signature spaces, both from the inside and the outside. Its dome which stands out as a beacon to the city, was relit in 2007 with 12 energy efficient lights, that use as much energy as two hair dryers.

From within, it offers a uniform cool appearance throughout the day. It is difficult for students to realize time as they sit inside this library. One of my observations were how there were lights facing the bookshelves to ease the process of finding a book in a space with limited natural light.
